The definitions we use in the policy can be complex and can mean different things to different people. This is why we have developed a definitions list below. The definitions listed below are what we will be using here at Langara. They are listed alphabetically, not in order of importance.
Complainant: the term for the person who has reported an act of sexual violence.
Cyber sexual harassment: using online mediums to engage in sexual harassment. This can include promoting sexual assault and sexual violence. Read the "Is This Legal" PDF prepared by West Coast Legal Education and Action Fund (West Coast LEAF) to learn more.
Disclosure: the act of informally telling someone from the College about an experience of sexual violence or misconduct.
Indecent exposure: exposing one’s body to another individual for a sexual purpose or coercing another individual to remove their clothing in order to expose their body, without their consent.
Non-consensual distribution of intimate images: distribution of sexually explicit imagery (image, photo or video) of a person or persons without consent.
Report: to give a spoken or written account of sexual violence or misconduct that has been experienced or observed.
Sanction: a consequence imposed on an individual for misconduct.
Sexual violence and misconduct: an umbrella term for any unwanted action carried out through sexual means or by targeting sexuality. Sexual violence includes any attempt or threat to commit an act of sexual violence.
Sexual assault: Any kind of unwanted sexual touching without an individual’s consent. This includes sexual abuse.
Sexual abuse: same definition as 'sexual assault'.
Sexual harassment: a form of sex/gender discrimination. Sexual harassment is unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature (including gendered discrimination) that can affect the learning/working environment and distress the individual.
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Either the server is overloaded or there is an error in the application.
Sexual trafficking and exploitation: the recruitment, transportation, exercising control or influence over the activities or movements of a person in order to exploit that person, typically through sexual means.
Violence: The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual against another person, or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, or deprivation.
Voyeurism: non-consensual viewing, photographing, or otherwise recording another individual in a location where there is an expectation of privacy and where the viewing, photographing or recording is done for a sexual purpose.
